The hex segment is longer than usual and drilled through to insert a spindle bar or screw. In doing so, the adapter & Jacobs chuck can be locked against the cross slide preventing that the Jacobs chuck starts to rotate in the tailstock. This can happen on somewhat heavier cuts/drilling. Or, use a wrench key for the same purpose.
